Counselors identify the problems related to addiction and establish healthy behaviors. This recognized and respected degree program trains practitioners in the field of addiction counseling and substance abuse treatment. The program includes courses designed to provide students with knowledge of the field through focusing on the development of counseling skills specific to the needs of chemically dependent clientele as identified by appropriate agencies. Students/applicants are responsible for contacting their state counseling certification agency for certification requirements and program approval. As a result, demand for substance abuse counselors is expected to increase much faster than demand for most other occupations through 2018. This next-level degree program is designed to meet the needs of learners who wish to pursue a career as an addiction counseling professional. The program prepares students to treat substance abuse and dependency disorders. Courses provide a comprehensive survey of counseling theories, group counseling, social and cultural issues, psychopharmacology, family issues, and more. In addition, a supervised internship provides 150 contact hours of opportunity for student to develop their counseling skills. In many states, a master's degree is required for the highest level of licensing or certification. Graduates of this program are prepared to meet the academic requirements for licensure in Arizona as a both a Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor (LASAC) and a Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC). Additionally, program graduates from most other states will be academically prepared to begin the process of seeking certification and licensure in their home state. Licensing and certification requirements may vary from state to state. It is the student's responsibility to check the requirements in their state. MS in Marriage and Family Therapy (Online)Back to topA marriage and family therapist (MFT) is a recognized and regulated mental health service provider in California, and a valid state license is required to provide designated therapeutic services and to use the title. This rigorous degree program prepares students for MFT licensure in the state of California. The California MFT licensing requirements reflect relatively high standards of preparation and are among the most stringent in the country (for similar licensure). Although the program courses were chosen at the time of development to meet the academic requirements established within the California Business and Professions Code, Chapter 13, it is the student's responsibility to check the licensing and certification requirements and verify their qualification upon completion of the program. In addition, 400 contact hours of supervised practicum experience provide students with the opportunity to develop their counseling skills. Graduates of this program are equipped to provide effective marriage and family therapy, and qualify for licensure in the state of California and other states.
