Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
(WASC), Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center offers three
degrees in the psychology program: the Master of Arts (MA), the
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD).
Saybrook is a premier learning environment that affirms and
expands the humanistic psychology tradition in the light of the
cultural transformations of the 21st century. Our programs focus
on the study of human experience within its philosophical,
scientific, social and political contexts, embracing a
scholar-practitioner model that comprises disciplined inquiry,
scholarly research and the expression of humanistic values in
one's life and work. Knowing that you are part of an engaged
community dedicated to making a real difference in the world is
one of the compelling reasons to come to Saybrook.
Saybrook blends residential and distance learning in flexible
programs that allow students to develop a course of study aligned
with personal and professional interests. Face-to-face learning
takes place in seminars and workshops during Residential
Conferences. Learning at a distance includes individually
mentored courses and online classes that allow for faculty and
student interaction. Saybrook's blended distance education
enables working professionals with a full life to successfully
pursue their academic and career goals.
Saybrook Graduate School offers a multi-year scholarship program
for new MA and PhD students. Awards have potential value up to
$24,000 over the academic lifetime of a PhD program (anticipated
4 years until at dissertation stage) and up to $12,000 for an MA
program (anticipated 2 years). Students who are awarded a
scholarship must have outstanding merit and financial need, and
continue to show ability to complete a Saybrook degree program in
a timely manner with a minimum of 12 units completed for the
first academic year.
Saybrook takes an inclusive, multi-disciplinary approach to the
study of psychology, exploring the breadth and depth of human
experience through scholarly research, writing and practice. We
encourage a lively spirit of inquiry and creativity; and an
appreciation of diversity and multiplicity. We view a Saybrook
education as a transformative process that endows the student
with conceptual and practical skills, but also the self-knowledge
and compassion needed to help others heal and change.
Saybrook's innovative program offers a spectrum of courses,
including many that explore new ideas and forms of practice based
on expanded definitions of health and wholeness that embrace both
individuals and cultures. The program is designed for students
planning or engaged in health care, teaching, community
development, consultation, mediation and conflict resolution,
counseling and guidance.
Students who earn a master's degree at Saybrook can transfer all
credits toward a Saybrook PhD. Students pursuing a general
(non-specialization) master's degree or doctoral degree in
psychology may focus their studies in any of the five
concentration areas:
Students interested in applied psychology for clinical practice
and licensure should consider Saybrook's PsyD, PhD Psychology
– Clinical Psychology Specialization or MA Psychology
– Marriage and Family Therapy Specialization.
Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology & Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) in Psychology – Jungian Studies Specialization
Back to top
In partnership with the C.G. Jung Educational Center of Houston,
Saybrook offers both an MA and PhD in Psychology with a
specialization in Jungian Studies. This distinctive and
innovative program uses a hybrid learning model of residential
and at-a-distance coursework to provide students with the benefit
of unique expertise in Jungian psychology through residential
seminars taught by leading Jungian analysts and scholars.
The Jungian Studies specialization is designed for clinicians who
are seeking to deepen their understanding of the dynamics of the
psyche, for those in the Saybrook PsyD program who desire to add
a depth dimension to their work and for those who wish to be
stimulated by psychodynamic perspectives as a catalyst for
personal growth. While other programs in clinical training and
academic preparation are available, no other program offers such
a rich mixture of in-person and at distance learning from master
teachers and mentors.
Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology - Creativity Studies
Specialization
Tapping into creativity--or our originality of everyday life--is
increasingly important for both individuals and society. Living
in a world that is complex and changes at an increasing speed
challenges all of us to develop our unique abilities. The
importance of understanding and encouraging creativity has been
widely recognized in many fields including education, business,
healthcare, government, the arts and science.
Students will receive a theoretical and practical understanding
of the creative process. Key aspects of creativity investigated
will include significant theoretical models, psychological
components, sociological implications, factors that encourage and
discourage creativity, creativity in organizations and creativity
in specific domains. Students will also develop a range of skills
from working with individuals and organizations to enhance the
creative process, to facilitating institutional creativity in
business organization, to leading groups in effective
collaboration, to teaching at the college level.
Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology - Marriage and Family Therapy
(MFT) Specialization
The MFT specialization offers the current educational
requirements (2007) needed to sit for the California Marriage and
Family Therapy license examination. Saybrook's program complies
with the requirements of the California Board of Behavioral
Sciences. The program may also be compatible with licensure
requirements in other states; however, state requirements vary,
so it is the responsibility of the student to verify the
licensing requirements of the state in which they wish to
practice.
Grounded in an integrative humanistic and transpersonal
tradition, Saybrook's MFT program focuses on personal growth and
family dynamics, helping people to find their own voice and also
to understand themselves as part of a family, a community, a
multicultural world. The program addresses the emerging issues of
racial and ethnic diversity, gender and age, honoring the
multiplicity of ways that family and relationship are defined
within cultures.
The Saybrook MFT specialization offers a personalized and
comprehensive program that balances face-to-face learning with
web-based learning and research. Foundational courses occur in
virtual classrooms where students participate as a cohort.
Clinical skills are developed in seminars and workshops during
Residential Conferences. The research project allows in-depth
exploration of an individual area of interest. Thus, students
develop the conceptual and clinical skills to interact
effectively with others and to help clients achieve healthy,
life-affirming relationships.

pursue a PsyD while ensuring comprehensive support of clinical
training outcomes. In-residence learning occurs at conveniently
clustered week-long and weekend conferences with the balance of
coursework completed at a distance. All residential learning

This 5-year PsyD program is designed for students who aspire to
make a difference in the practice of psychology and who envision
a wholistic approach to their life's work that integrates
professional and personal growth through a learning model that
emphasizes scholarship, practice and service.
Saybrook's program emphasizes specializations in a particular
life-span development phase such as adolescence, mid-life or late
adult life. However, students will also have the flexibility to
specialize in other areas that are supported by the experience
and expertise of Saybrook clinical faculty such as forensic
psychology, integrative and alternative approaches to health or
neuroscience.
The Saybrook PsyD program is a cohort residential program for
those entering with a bachelor's degree that is comprised of 4
years of course work that is completed in residence and at a
distance, plus a fifth year comprised of the internship and
dissertation. Time to completion for students entering with a
bachelor's degree is anticipated to require the full 5 years.
As a cohort-based clinical program, Saybrook's model balances its
in-residence requirements with distance learning to offer maximum
flexibility for working adults to pursue a PsyD while ensuring
comprehensive support of clinical training outcomes. In-residence
learning occurs at specified intervals throughout the program, as
residential conferences presented in weeklong and weekend
