Marylhurst University

The psychology degree program is structured to prepare you for graduate-level study or for employment in a clinical, research or applied setting, such as human resources, education, community outreach, substance abuse rehabilitation, case management or social work. Regardless of the path you choose, your Marylhurst liberal arts education will give you the tools you need to effectively and ethically participate in your community.

In the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program you will explore a number of important topics, including the following:

  • The who, what, when, where and why of human behavior
  • The internal and external influences on thought, behavior, learning and development
  • The history and progression of psychology as a discipline, and what it means to call it a science
  • How public opinion and politics, as well as rigorous investigation and theory, influence how we define and treat "abnormal" behavior
  • A variety of topics, including but not limited to, neurotransmitters, nurturance, prenatal brain development and cutting-edge research on Alzheimer's disease

Marylhurst's Gerontology program may be completed as an undergraduate or graduate-level certificate. The credits may be applied as the focus area of your bachelor's degree or MA in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Integrating professional and liberal arts studies, as a student of gerontology you will embrace a holistic approach to adult development and aging. You will explore topics important to the study of gerontology, including the following:

  • The social, psychological and biophysical changes that occur as part of the aging process
  • The political and economic issues of old age
  • The importance of social, cultural and historical context in understanding the aging process
