Union Institute & University
UI&U's programs are not one-size-fits-all in either
content or delivery.
Union Institute & University makes it easy for working adults
to design their studies around their schedules and their academic
and professional interests. With the appropriate work experience
and academic study, some learners are able to complete their
degree in as little as one year.
Options Include:
-
Online - Learn online and at a distance from wherever
you live and work. The unique learner-centered programs
at UI&U are also available entirely at a distance. Enjoy
the one-to-one support of your faculty advisor while working
from your home.
-
Learning Centers - At UI&U centers located in
North Miami Beach, FL; Cincinnati, OH; and Los Angeles and
Sacramento, CA, you work closely with a personal faculty
advisor who helps you design your B.A. or B.S. degree. You
can attend courses or work individually with faculty where
and when it is most convenient. You create your own program
and work at your own pace.
-
Brief Residencies in Vermont - Combine brief periods
in residence on campus with extended periods of faculty
guided independent study. The residencies feature seminars,
workshops, and faculty and learner presentations. There are
two brief-residency options available:
-
Cycle Option - Attend two one-week residencies
each year on UI&U’s Vermont College campus in
Montpelier. Between residencies you work with your
self-designed study in dialogue with your faculty mentor.
-
Weekend Option - Attend residency for one weekend
each month at UI&U’s Vermont College campus in
Montpelier or in Brattleboro.
The Small College Experience You Will Love
As a learner in Union Institute & University’s
undergraduate programs you will benefit from the personal
attention of a one-to-one relationship with your faculty advisor.
At UI&U's Vermont College, you can experience a heritage that
dates from 1834. UI&U's commitment to progressive education
affords learners a unique approach to faculty-guided study.
Explore Your Passion
You and your advisor design an individualized degree plan
that fits your needs and interests, and takes full advantage of
your previous course work, training and experiences. Your
program can prepare you for a wide range of professions or for
future graduate study.
Bachelor of Arts with a Concentration in Counseling &
Psychology or Social Work
Counseling & Psychology and Social Work are useful
professional preparation for careers in social work, human
services, business and management, teacher education, and other
areas.
In addition, students often study psychology because they want to
understand themselves and others better, or because they seek a
theoretical or scholarly knowledge of things that have been
happening in their lives. With the flexibility of
UI&U’s interdisciplinary model, learners have the
unique ability to pursue study projects in psychology that cross
over into other fields, such as religion and psychology,
psychohistory, art and psychology, and organizational psychology.
This concentration can include studies as varied as experiential
learning through volunteering at a battered woman’s
shelter, an exploration of the therapeutic use of art and poetry,
or the history of Jungian psychoanalysis in the United States.
Some other examples of study projects created by UI&U
learners and their mentors:
- Counseling Theories
- Marriage and the Family
- Social Welfare Systems
- Jung, the Post-Jungians, and Existential Psychology
- Child Development
- Personality Theories
- Bereavement Counseling
- A Humanistic Approach to Therapy
- Family Systems: Theories and Therapy
- Adoption Policies and Practices
