Master of Arts in Professional CounselingBack to topOttawa University offers students the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge in a specialty area by completing the Master of Arts in Professional Counseling degree with one of four concentrations. Concentrations are available in the following areas: Christian CounselingThis concentrated area of study is designed for students who are interested in a program that leads to licensure in professional counseling combined with coursework providing a focus for Christians who work as counselors in Christian and secular settings. Students in the Christian Counseling specialty must be simultaneously, but separately, admitted to both the Ottawa University and the Phoenix Seminary programs. The program consists of significant coursework from both schools. Upon successful completion of all requirements of each school, graduates are awarded the Ottawa University Master of Arts in Professional Counseling (MAPC) and the Phoenix Seminary Graduate Diploma in Christian Counseling (GDCC). Expressive Arts TherapyStudents admitted to the Expressive Arts Therapy specialty are expected to complete the entire specialty program in the sequence specified for program activities. The course of study consists of specific expressive arts therapy courses, two practica and an advanced practicum/internship in expressive arts therapy in the final year. Marriage and Family TherapyCompletion of the Master of Arts in Professional Counseling (MAPC) degree with a minimum of 15 semester credit hours in marriage and family therapy coursework, plus 9 hours in electives, is applicable to the education requirements for associate licensure in professional counseling, but not licensure in marriage and family therapy. Individuals interested in meeting the State of Arizona curriculum requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist and those for certification by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) (effective 2004; see www.bbhe.state.az.us and www.aamft.org), must complete 27 semester credit hours of coursework. AAMFT certification and Arizona licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy also require extended practicum training. Treatment of Trauma, Abuse and DeprivationThis concentration allows students to develop understanding and clinical skills for working with individuals, families and groups who are recent victims or adult survivors of violence, abuse, emergency and disaster, loss, and/or neglect and deprivation. You will learn to evaluate issues regarding diversity and social equity and to assist people in coping with personal challenges related to poverty, substance abuse, mental health and relational crisis.
