Houston Licensing Requirements

While the city of Houston does not have specific licensing or certification requirements for psychology-related jobs, the state of Texas does. All of the licenses regulated by the state of Texas require passing scores on both the national exam for each field and the Texas Mental Health Jurisprudence Examination administered by the appropriate state board.

  • A doctoral degree in psychology
  • Two years of experience as a provisionally licensed psychologist under supervision

  • Completion of 3,000 hours of supervised experience in professional counseling, half of which must include direct client contact

Marriage and Family Therapist

  • A master's degree in marriage and family therapy
  • Completion of 3,000 hours of supervised experience in the field of marriage and family services, half of which must include direct clinical services

Social Worker

The Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners recognizes three different classifications of social workers: Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

  • A bachelor's degree (for LBSW) or master's degree (for LMSW or LCSW) in social work
  • Two years of supervised experience as a social worker in the appropriate professional setting as designated by the type of licensure (for LMSW or LCSW)
