How to Get Your Counseling Degree Online
You can get your counseling degree from an online program. Here's how.
The popularity and quality of distance learning continues to increase. Still, some state licensing requirements do not yet recognize counseling degrees online. Often online degrees in counseling are used to fulfill prerequisites and prepare you for a MA, MS or MSW.
With an online master's program in counseling, you will still need to complete an internship, during which you are supervised and your work hours recorded in order to qualify for the licensing exam.
What's Available Online?
Depending on your needs, you can earn your counseling degree partially online or entirely on campus. The more popular online counseling psychology degrees are:
- Online master's degree in counseling, MA, MS or MSW
- Online PhD in counseling psychology, PhD, PsyD, EdD
- Online certificate courses for counseling and psychology
With an online master's program in counseling, you will still need to complete an internship, during which you are supervised and your work hours recorded in order to qualify for the licensing exam.
Hybrid Counseling Degrees Online
A more common form of a counseling degree online is the hybrid degree. Hybrid degrees are a mixture of online classes and campus-based classes. They are also a great option for people who may need to work while getting their degree.
Counseling is a hands-on career. Therefore, hybrid degrees have been created allowing you to actively fulfill your internship, report to regular online classes, and meet on-campus quarterly with your entire class.
Academic Research
A counseling degree online is also an excellent choice for the student who wishes to pursue a more strictly academic tract in psychology, perhaps with the intention of continuing straight through to their doctorate. These students may not necessarily want to become one-on-one therapists, but are interested in academic research.
Be certain to check that the online counseling degree meets your state's licensing requirements.
